Core Business Segment

In 2023, over 655 million kilograms of chicken was produced, 28,950 full-time jobs were supported across Ontario, $5.3 billion dollars in economic activity was generated, along with 83 new barns built and over 270 million chicks placed.

Throughout 2023, demand for chicken continued to be strong. This was supported by competing meat prices and overall market conditions.

To inform CFO’s recommendations to Chicken Farmers of Canada in the national allocation setting process, CFO consulted with the Ontario industry value chain and also examined market conditions using available data to understand consumer demand as well as expected supply including imports.

CFO remained steadfast in the commitment to achieve 100% of production utilization. Beginning in 2022, challenges related to chick supply impacting utilization continued periodically in 2023. CFO continued to work closely with the Ontario Broiler Hatching Egg and Chick Commission (OBHECC) and the Canadian Hatching Egg Producers (CHEP) to secure the proper number of chicks for CFO farmers, with supply stabilizing in A-184.

CFO continues to encourage every farmer to target 100% of their allotment, each and every quota period.

As always, CFO’s focus remains on ensuring Ontarians continually have access to safe, healthy, locally-grown chicken.

CFO Cares: Farmers to Food Banks

The CFO Cares: Farmers to Food Banks program continues to support local food banks. In 2023, 475 Chicken Farmers of Ontario (CFO) farmers donated to local food banks, supporting those who needed it most.

Since the program’s inception in 2015, CFO farmer donations contributed to over 9 million chicken meals to Ontarians in need.
